Harry Quebert, a literary icon, suddenly finds himself indicted for murder after the body of Nola Kellergan, a 15-year-old girl who has been missing for many years, is found buried on his property. When Marcus Goldman, a young author, is visiting Harry’s home to find a cure for his own writer’s block as his publisher’s deadline looms, he sees his plans upended when his mentor Harry is publicly implicated in this cold-case and sordid murder, and decides to investigate to help and save his friend.
